The prepress department
at Winchester Printers is ready to assist you in all stages of design, composition,
and preparation of your artwork for press. In order to reduce time
to press, it is generally recommended that you transfer your files to us
digitally through FTP or
Email. Of course, we gladly accept in-person delivery or portable
media sent via courier service. Please see our
prepress guidance
on how to prepare your files to ensure that all required fonts and graphics are
included.
FTP
|
 |
FTP, or File Transfer Protocol, is the best way to send large
electronic files to our prepress department. By using an
FTP client, you can transfer files directly to our FTP site over the
internet, avoiding some of the potential problems with sending files as email
attachments. An FTP client is a small piece of software that runs
on your computer and initiates a transfer session with an FTP server.
Many web browsers also support FTP.
If you have questions or need assistance with FTP, please don't hesitate to
contact us
. One of our knowledgeable prepress team members will be glad to assist
you. Accessing the Winchester Printers FTP Server
In order to access our FTP server, you will need the following information:
-
Host Name (or URL): ftp.winchesterprinters.com
-
Username (user ID)
-
Password
When you connect to our site, your FTP software should prompt you for this
information. Call us to receive a username and password. If a directory
is requested, leave it blank. Once you have connected, you should see a
list of files that currently reside on our server. Dragging and dropping
your files into this directory listing will copy them to our server and make
them available to us. Depending on your FTP software, you may have to
click the PUT button, which will begin the file upload process. To
avoid delays and confusion, please use easily identifiable file names. It
is also helpful if you call or email us when you have uploaded a file.
If you require a more secure location, contact us and we can discuss
alternative approaches.
Using a Web Browser
for FTP
Some versions of Internet Explorer and Netscape
support FTP uploads. To use a web browser, type the following line in the
address bar:
ftp://ftp.winchesterprinters.com
Be sure to replace the more common http:// header with ftp://
. The browser will prompt you for a username and password.
Alternatively, you can bypass the prompt by typing
ftp://username:password@ftp.winchesterprinters.com
in the address bar. In Internet Explorer, you may have to check the box
next to Enable folder view in FTP sites in Tools | Internet Options |
Advanced
for this to work properly.
FTP Client Software
Fetch
is installed on many Macintosh computers. Check to see if you already
have it.
Sending Files as Email Attachments
|
 |
Winchester Printers will also receive your files as attachments to an email
message. We have a 10 MB maximum size on email (including all
attachments); Keep this in mind when choosing between FTP and email.
Email delivery is less immediate than FTP and is more prone to file corruption,
but for smaller files, it can be a convenient alternative. Feel free to
email your files directly to the salesperson or prepress team member that you
are working with, or to
prepress@winchesterprinters.com.
